Om Jai Jagdish Hare

ॐ जय जगदीश हरे

Om Jai Jagdish Hare is one of the best-known Hindu aartis, a Hindi hymn to Lord Vishnu as Jagdish, "Lord of the universe", written by Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri of Punjab around 1870. It has a refrain and seven stanzas asking Vishnu to remove sorrow, forgive our faults and increase our faith. Many families close their puja or Satyanarayan katha with it, in India and across the diaspora.

Refrain

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, Swami Jai Jagdish Hare

Bhakt Janon Ke Sankat, Das Janon Ke Sankat,

Kshan Mein Door Kare

Om, glory to you, Hari, Lord of the universe! Glory to you, O Master! In a single moment you take away the troubles of your devotees and your servants.

Stanza 1

Jo Dhyave Phal Pave, Dukh Binse Man Ka

Swami Dukh Binse Man Ka

Sukh Sampatti Ghar Aave, Kasht Mite Tan Ka

Whoever meditates on you receives the fruit, and the sorrow of the mind melts away. Happiness and prosperity come into the home, and the pain of the body is eased.

Refrain

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, Swami Jai Jagdish Hare

Bhakt Janon Ke Sankat, Das Janon Ke Sankat,

Kshan Mein Door Kare

Stanza 2

Maat Pita Tum Mere, Sharan Gahun Main Kiski

Swami Sharan Gahun Main Kiski

Tum Bin Aur Na Dooja, Aas Karun Jiski

You are my mother and my father. Whose shelter else should I seek? Without you there is no one else in whom I could place my hope.

Refrain

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, Swami Jai Jagdish Hare

Bhakt Janon Ke Sankat, Das Janon Ke Sankat,

Kshan Mein Door Kare

Stanza 3

Tum Puran Paramatma, Tum Antaryami

Swami Tum Antaryami

Parabrahm Parmeshwar, Tum Sabke Swami

You are the complete, Supreme Self; you dwell within and know every heart. Transcendent Brahman, Supreme Lord, you are the master of all.

Refrain

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, Swami Jai Jagdish Hare

Bhakt Janon Ke Sankat, Das Janon Ke Sankat,

Kshan Mein Door Kare

Stanza 4

Tum Karuna Ke Sagar, Tum Palankarta

Swami Tum Palankarta

Main Moorakh Khal Kami, Kripa Karo Bharta

You are the ocean of compassion, the one who sustains all. I am foolish, flawed and full of desire. Have mercy on me, O Upholder.

Refrain

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, Swami Jai Jagdish Hare

Bhakt Janon Ke Sankat, Das Janon Ke Sankat,

Kshan Mein Door Kare

Stanza 5

Tum Ho Ek Agochar, Sabke Pranpati

Swami Sabke Pranpati

Kis Vidhi Milun Dayamay, Tumko Main Kumati

You are the One, beyond the reach of the senses, the lord of every living breath. By what means can I, so poor in understanding, come to you, O Merciful One?

Refrain

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, Swami Jai Jagdish Hare

Bhakt Janon Ke Sankat, Das Janon Ke Sankat,

Kshan Mein Door Kare

Stanza 6

Deenbandhu Dukhharta, Tum Thakur Mere

Swami Tum Thakur Mere

Apne Haath Uthao, Dwar Pada Tere

Friend of the helpless, remover of sorrow, you are my Lord. Raise your hand in blessing; I lie at your door.

Refrain

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, Swami Jai Jagdish Hare

Bhakt Janon Ke Sankat, Das Janon Ke Sankat,

Kshan Mein Door Kare

Stanza 7

Vishay Vikar Mitao, Paap Haro Deva

Swami Paap Haro Deva

Shraddha Bhakti Badhao, Santan Ki Seva

Wipe away my craving for sense-pleasures and the mind's distortions; take away my sins, O God. Increase my faith and devotion, and my love of serving the saints.

Refrain

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, Swami Jai Jagdish Hare

Bhakt Janon Ke Sankat, Das Janon Ke Sankat,

Kshan Mein Door Kare
