About
Krishna was born in Mathura at midnight, in Rohini nakshatra. Devotees fast through the day, decorate a cradle for Laddu Gopal and sing bhajans. At the Nishita moment near midnight they bathe him in panchamrit, dress him and offer butter, makhan-mishri and panjiri. The next day is Dahi Handi, when teams form human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung high.
In South Indian homes, small footprints are drawn with rice-flour paste from the front door to the puja room, as if baby Krishna has walked in. ISKCON and other Vaishnava temples sometimes keep the festival a day after the date in household calendars.

Questions
When is Krishna Janmashtami 2027 in India?
Wednesday, August 25, 2027 (New Delhi panchang). The fast is kept on Wednesday, and the Nishita puja is at 12:01 to 12:45 AM, which is already the early hours of Thursday, August 26.
We live outside India. Is the date the same for us?
We list the India date only. Abroad the day can differ by one, and the midnight puja time is different in every city. Check with your local temple.
Why are there sometimes two Janmashtami dates?
When Ashtami tithi and Rohini nakshatra fall on different nights, Smarta households and Vaishnava communities can keep different days. ISKCON and other Vaishnava temples sometimes celebrate a day after the household calendar date. Follow your temple or your family's sampradaya.
When do we break the fast?
Most families break it after the midnight puja, with the prasad. Some wait for the parana time after sunrise the next morning. Go by your family's practice.
It's a weekday. Can we celebrate on the weekend?
Keep the fast and the midnight puja on the day if you can. Since the puja is late at night, many working families manage it after office. Temple programmes on the nearest weekend are a nice addition for the children.
