About

Navratri begins on Ashwin Shukla Pratipada with Ghatasthapana. A kalash of water is set up and barley is sown in soil beside it, and the Goddess is believed to stay there for the nine days. Each day honours one form of Navadurga: Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri.

Families keep a full or partial fast and recite the Durga Saptashati or the aarti. On Ashtami or Navami they honour young girls as the Goddess (Kanya Puja). The same days look different across India. Gujarat dances garba at night, Bengal celebrates Durga Puja, women in Telangana play Bathukamma, and many homes in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra set up a golu of dolls.

In 2026 Durga Ashtami is Monday, October 19 in India but Sunday, October 18 in the US, UK and Canada, because there the tithi is already running at local sunrise on the 18th.

Why is Ashtami a day earlier in the US?

It is the same tithi. Ashtami runs from 8:28 AM on October 18 to 10:52 AM on October 19, Indian time (Ujjain panchang). In India it has not started at sunrise on the 18th, so Monday the 19th is Ashtami. On Ashtami, or Navami if that is your family's custom. In India both are Monday, October 19. In the US, UK and Canada, Ashtami is Sunday, October 18 and Navami is Monday, October 19.

Do I have to fast all nine days?

No. Many people fast only on the first and last day, or only on Ashtami. Choose what suits your health and your family's custom.

We can't keep an akhand diya burning in our apartment. What can we do?

Light the diya during the morning and evening puja instead. Some families abroad use an electric diya for the nine-day flame. Never leave a real flame burning when no one is home.
