Jai Parvati Mata

जय पार्वती माता

Jai Parvati Mata is a short Hindi aarti to Goddess Parvati, Shiva's consort and the mother of Ganesha. Its refrain and seven stanzas recall her birth as Sati and then as the daughter of the Himalaya, her victory over Shumbha and Nishumbha, and her joyful life with Shiva. Women sing it at Teej, Karwa Chauth and Gauri puja, and on Mondays.

Questions

When is Jai Parvati Mata sung?

At the end of Gauri puja. That means Karwa Chauth evening, Hartalika Teej, Hariyali Teej, Gangaur and Mangala Gauri vrats in Shravan, and Mondays in many homes. Some families sing it right after Om Jai Shiv Omkara.

Can I sing this aarti on Karwa Chauth?

Yes. Karwa Chauth is a Gauri puja, and many families close the evening puja with this aarti after the katha, before going out to wait for the moon. Others sing Om Jai Shiv Omkara or Jai Ganesh Deva; follow your family's way.

Is Parvati the same as Durga?

Tradition sees them as one Goddess in different moods. Parvati, or Gauri, is the gentle wife of Shiva and mother of Ganesha; Durga is the same Shakti in her warrior form. That is why this aarti also mentions her killing Shumbha and Nishumbha.

How long does it take?

About four minutes, singing the refrain after each stanza.

Source and review

Source: Traditional Hindi aarti as printed in popular aarti-sangrah booklets; cross-checked line by line against BhaktiBharat.com, Drik Panchang (Hindi) and Bharat Discovery (bharatdiscovery.org)

All three sources have the refrain and seven stanzas in the same order. We follow BhaktiBharat for the stanza text, with the spellings and readings that Drik Panchang and Bharat Discovery share: 'ब्रह्म सनातन देवी' (BhaktiBharat 'ब्रह्मा'), 'नाशिनि' (BhaktiBharat 'नासनि'), 'जय सेवक त्राता' (BhaktiBharat 'निज सेवक त्राता'), 'वाहन' (BhaktiBharat 'वहान'), 'हेमांचल', 'सखियन संग राता' (BhaktiBharat 'सखियाँ संगराता'), 'सहस्र'. Drik Panchang has a different sixth stanza and closing stanza (noted on those verses). Bharat Discovery's refrain reads 'मैया जय गौरा माता' and drops 'नन्दी' in stanza 5. Many singers repeat the refrain at the very end. We have not compared against a Gita Press printing.
