About

Bhai Dooj falls on Kartika Shukla Dwitiya, the last of the five days of Diwali. It is also called Yama Dwitiya. Tradition says Yamuna had long invited her brother Yama, the lord of death, to her home, and on this day he finally came. She welcomed him with a tilak, an aarti and a meal she had cooked, and Yama was so pleased that he blessed every brother who visits his sister on this day.

The day has many names. It is Bhai Phonta in Bengal, Bhau Beej in Maharashtra and Goa, Bhai Tika in Nepal, and Bhagini Hasta Bhojanam ('a meal from the sister's hand') in Telugu homes. The details differ, but the heart is the same: the sister prays for her brother, and the brother promises to stand by her.

The tilak is traditionally done in the aparahna, the early afternoon. In 2026 the Dwitiya covers the US, UK and Canadian afternoon on Tuesday, November 10, and the Indian and Australian afternoon on Wednesday, November 11. For families split across continents, a tilak and aarti on a video call has become common.

Questions

When is Bhai Dooj 2026 in the USA and UK?

Tuesday, November 10, 2026. The tilak time (aparahna) is 12:42 PM to 2:43 PM in New Jersey, 12:53 PM to 2:57 PM in San Jose and 12:39 PM to 2:29 PM in London. Canada also keeps it on the 10th; Toronto's window is 1:00 PM to 2:59 PM.

Why is Bhai Dooj on Tuesday in America but Wednesday in India?

Bhai Dooj is kept on the day the Dwitiya tithi covers the afternoon. In 2026 the Dwitiya starts at 2:00 PM on November 10 in India, after the afternoon window, so India keeps it on the 11th. In New Jersey it starts at 3:30 AM on November 10, so the US afternoon that day is already Dwitiya.

Bhai Dooj is on a working day for us. Can we do the tilak in the evening, or at the weekend?

Tradition prefers the afternoon of the Dwitiya, but many working families do the tilak in the evening instead. In New Jersey the Dwitiya lasts until 5:23 AM on November 11, so the evening of the 10th is still inside it. If you can only meet at the weekend, many families do the tilak then and keep the day itself with a call. Go by what feels right in your family.

My brother lives in another country. How do we do Bhai Dooj?

On a video call. The sister does the aarti in front of the screen at her time, and the brother applies a tilak himself. Time zones make this tricky, so pick an hour that falls on the Dwitiya day for at least one of you.

Is Bhai Dooj the same as Bhai Phonta, Bhau Beej and Bhai Tika?

They are the same festival with different names and customs: Bhai Phonta in Bengal, Bhau Beej in Maharashtra and Goa, Bhai Tika in Nepal, and Bhagini Hasta Bhojanam in Telugu homes.
