About
Diwali celebrates Shri Ram's return to Ayodhya. Families also believe Lakshmi visits homes that are clean, lit and welcoming on this night. The main Lakshmi Puja is done after sunset in pradosh kaal, ideally in the Vrishabha lagna window. The muhurat depends on your local sunset, so it is different in every city.
In Tamil Nadu and much of South India, Deepavali is kept at dawn on Naraka Chaturdashi, with an oil bath before sunrise (Ganga snanam), new clothes and sweets. Some years this falls on the same day as North Indian Lakshmi Puja, and some years on the day before. Check a Tamil panchang for your city.
In 2027 the India muhurat is very short, 6:34 PM to 7:05 PM in New Delhi, because Amavasya ends at 7:05 PM. In the US, UK and Canada, Lakshmi Puja that year is a day earlier, on Thursday, October 28, 2027.

What you will need
Texts to recite
- Vakratunda MahakayaVakratunda Mahakaya is a two-line Sanskrit shloka to Lord Ganesh and one of the most widely recited. It asks the Lord with the curved trunk, radiant as ten million suns, to keep all our work free of obstacles. Tradition says it before any puja, study, journey or new venture, and many people chant it 11, 21 or 108 times on Wednesdays and on Ganesh Chaturthi.
- Shri SuktamShri Suktam is the oldest hymn to Goddess Lakshmi, a Vedic prayer of fifteen mantras from the khila (appendix) hymns of the Rig Veda. It asks Agni to bring Lakshmi, golden and never departing, into the home and to drive out poverty. A sixteenth verse, given here, tells the devotee to recite the fifteen mantras daily; families chant it at Lakshmi puja, on Fridays and on Diwali night.
- Kanakadhara StotramKanakadhara Stotram is a Sanskrit hymn to Goddess Lakshmi that tradition credits to Adi Shankaracharya. In 18 verses it asks for Lakshmi's compassionate glance to fall on the devotee, and a closing verse says that one who recites it daily becomes like Kuber. Tradition says that when young Shankara first sang it for a poor woman, Lakshmi showered golden amla fruits on her house; people recite it on Fridays, Akshaya Tritiya and Diwali.
- Mahalakshmi AshtakamMahalakshmi Ashtakam is a short Sanskrit hymn of eight verses in which Indra praises Goddess Mahalakshmi. Every verse ends with "Mahalakshmi Namostu Te", "O Mahalakshmi, I bow to you", and three closing verses describe the merit of reciting it. Families recite it on Fridays, during Navratri and at Lakshmi puja on Diwali.
- Lakshmi ChalisaLakshmi Chalisa is a devotional hymn of forty chaupais to Goddess Lakshmi in simple Awadhi Hindi, framed by an opening doha and sortha and two closing dohas. It recalls her rising from the ocean of milk and her birth as Sita, and asks her to live in the devotee's heart and home. Families read it on Fridays, on Sharad Purnima and on Diwali night.
- Kuber MantraThe Kuber mantra "Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya Dhanadhanyadhipataye" is the best-known prayer to Kuber, treasurer of the gods, asking for wealth and grain. This page also gives the Vedic "Rajadhirajaya" mantra that South Indian temples chant in Mantrapushpam, and the short "Om Kuberaya Namah". Families chant them on Dhanteras and Diwali, usually 108 times on a mala.
- Jai Ganesh DevaJai Ganesh Deva is a Hindi aarti to Lord Ganesh and one of the most widely sung aartis in Hindu homes. It opens "Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva, Mata Jaki Parvati Pita Mahadeva" and has a refrain and five short stanzas about the one-tusked, kind Lord, one of which names "Sur Shyam". Most household pujas open with it, and it is sung on Wednesdays, on Sankashti Chaturthi and every evening of Ganesh Chaturthi.
- Om Jai Lakshmi MataOm Jai Lakshmi Mata is a Hindi aarti to Goddess Lakshmi, sung while waving the lamp at the end of Lakshmi puja. It has a refrain and seven short stanzas that praise her as Mother of the world and the source of prosperity and good qualities. Families sing it at Lakshmi puja on Diwali night and on Fridays.
Questions
What is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat for Diwali 2026 in the USA?
Diwali is on Sunday, November 8, 2026 in the USA, the same day as India. The muhurat is 5:06 PM to 6:54 PM in New Jersey and 5:23 PM to 7:14 PM in San Jose. It sits inside the pradosh kaal, in the Vrishabha lagna window, which tradition prefers because it is a fixed (sthir) lagna.
Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) 2026 date in the UK, Canada and Australia?
Sunday, November 8, 2026 in all three. The muhurat is 4:35 PM to 6:12 PM in London, 5:17 PM to 7:03 PM in Toronto, and 8:04 PM to 9:33 PM in Sydney.
Can we do Lakshmi puja on the weekend instead?
In 2026 you don't have to choose, because Diwali falls on a Sunday everywhere we list. In general, tradition ties Lakshmi Puja to the Amavasya evening, so that is the night for the home puja. Many temples abroad hold Diwali events on the nearest weekend, and going is lovely, but it is in addition to the puja at home. If you miss the muhurat, a puja later the same night is still your Diwali puja.
Is it okay to use electric diyas instead of real ones?
Many families abroad do, especially in apartments with smoke detectors or rented homes that don't allow flames. A common way is to light one real ghee diya at the puja, watched the whole time, and use electric diyas for the rest of the home and through the night.
Is Diwali on a different day in the UK and USA in 2027?
Yes. In 2027 Lakshmi Puja is on Friday, October 29 in India and Sydney, but Thursday, October 28 in London, New Jersey, California and Toronto, because Amavasya covers the local evening a day earlier there. The India muhurat that year is short, only 6:34 PM to 7:05 PM in New Delhi, since Amavasya ends at 7:05 PM.
When do Tamil families celebrate Deepavali?
At dawn on Naraka Chaturdashi, with an oil bath before sunrise, new clothes and crackers. Some years this is the same day as North Indian Lakshmi Puja and some years the day before. Check a Tamil panchang or your local temple for your city.
