About
Karwa Chauth falls on Kartika Krishna Chaturthi, four days after Sharad Purnima. The fast starts before sunrise, often after a sargi meal sent by the mother-in-law, and in most families lasts without food or water until the moon is seen. In the evening women dress up and gather for the katha and the puja of Gauri (Parvati), Shiva, Ganesha and Kartikeya, passing the thalis around the circle. When the moon rises they look at it through a sieve, offer arghya from the karwa, and break the fast with water from their husband's hand.
The day is set by one rule: Chaturthi tithi should be running when the moon rises in your city. In 2026 that happens on the evening of 28 October across the USA and Canada, and on 29 October in India, the UK and Australia. In London the Chaturthi has actually ended before either evening's moonrise; drikpanchang still lists Thursday 29 October for London.
Moonrise times differ a lot. drikpanchang gives 8:17 PM for New Delhi, 7:38 PM for New Jersey, 8:07 PM for San Jose, 6:31 PM for London, 7:45 PM for Toronto and 11:14 PM for Sydney. The US Naval Observatory's figures run 5 to 9 minutes earlier, so start watching a little before your time.

What you will need
Texts to recite
- Vakratunda MahakayaVakratunda Mahakaya is a two-line Sanskrit shloka to Lord Ganesh and one of the most widely recited. It asks the Lord with the curved trunk, radiant as ten million suns, to keep all our work free of obstacles. Tradition says it before any puja, study, journey or new venture, and many people chant it 11, 21 or 108 times on Wednesdays and on Ganesh Chaturthi.
- Karwa Chauth Vrat KathaThe Karwa Chauth vrat katha is the story married women read or hear on Karwa Chauth evening, before the moon rises. Its main story is of Veeravati, whose seven brothers tricked her into breaking her fast with a false moon, and who won her husband back by keeping the fast faithfully. A shorter second story tells how a devoted wife named Karva saved her husband from a crocodile.
- Jai Parvati MataJai Parvati Mata is a short Hindi aarti to Goddess Parvati, Shiva's consort and the mother of Ganesha. Its refrain and seven stanzas recall her birth as Sati and then as the daughter of the Himalaya, her victory over Shumbha and Nishumbha, and her joyful life with Shiva. Women sing it at Teej, Karwa Chauth and Gauri puja, and on Mondays.
- Om Jai Shiv OmkaraOm Jai Shiv Omkara is one of the most widely sung Hindi aartis of Lord Shiva. Its refrain and eleven stanzas praise him as Om itself, in whom Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are one, and the closing stanza names Swami Shivanand as the poet. Families sing it with a lamp at the end of Shiva puja, especially on Mondays, in Shravan and on Maha Shivratri.
- Jai Ganesh DevaJai Ganesh Deva is a Hindi aarti to Lord Ganesh and one of the most widely sung aartis in Hindu homes. It opens "Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva, Mata Jaki Parvati Pita Mahadeva" and has a refrain and five short stanzas about the one-tusked, kind Lord, one of which names "Sur Shyam". Most household pujas open with it, and it is sung on Wednesdays, on Sankashti Chaturthi and every evening of Ganesh Chaturthi.
Questions
Karwa Chauth 2026 moonrise time in New Jersey?
Wednesday, October 28, 2026. drikpanchang gives 7:38 PM for Edison and the US Naval Observatory gives 7:32 PM, so start looking from about 7:30 PM. Sunrise that morning, the end of sargi time, is 7:23 AM.
What is the Karwa Chauth 2026 date in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia?
USA and Canada: Wednesday, October 28 (moonrise 8:07 PM in San Jose, 7:45 PM in Toronto). UK and Australia: Thursday, October 29, the same day as India (moonrise 6:31 PM in London, 11:14 PM in Sydney).
Why is Karwa Chauth a day earlier in America than in India?
The fast is kept on the evening when Chaturthi tithi is running at moonrise. The tithi is the same moment worldwide, but your clock is not. In New Jersey the 2026 Chaturthi runs from 3:36 PM on October 28 to 12:39 PM on October 29, so only the October 28 moonrise falls inside it.
What if it's cloudy in London and we can't see the moon?
This happens a lot in the UK in late October. Many women wait until the listed moonrise time (6:31 PM in London), face east, offer arghya and break the fast. Some families wait a little longer for a break in the clouds, and some accept seeing the moon on a video call from a relative where the sky is clear. There is no single rule, so go by your family's custom.
In the UK the Chaturthi ends before moonrise. Is 29 October still right?
In London the 2026 Chaturthi runs from 7:36 PM on October 28 to 4:39 PM on October 29 (GMT), so neither evening's moonrise falls inside it. drikpanchang lists Thursday, October 29 for London. If your temple gives a different date, follow your temple.
Do I have to keep it nirjala if I'm pregnant or unwell?
No. Health comes first. Many women in that situation drink water or have fruit and milk during the day and still do the evening puja and arghya.
