About

Worshipping Varalakshmi is said to equal worshipping all eight Lakshmis (Ashta Lakshmi), who give wealth, grain, courage, children and more. A kalash is dressed as the Goddess, with a coconut for her face, jewels and a saree. Women tie a yellow thread with nine knots on the right wrist, offer nine kinds of naivedya and invite other married women home for tamboolam.

The vrat katha tells of Charumati, a devoted wife to whom the Goddess appeared in a dream and taught this vratam. Telugu homes call the thread the toram and hold a perantam in the evening. Many Tamil homes welcome the Goddess at the doorstep on Thursday evening and do the main puja on Friday.

How to observe

1Clean the home and draw kolam or muggulu. Decorate the puja mandapam with banana stems and mango leaves if you have them.
2Prepare the kalash: fill it with rice or water, place a coconut on top and dress it as the Goddess. A clean steel or brass pot works as a kalash.
3Worship Ganesha first, then invoke Varalakshmi into the kalash.
4Do the sixteen-step puja with flowers, kumkum and the Lakshmi Ashtottaram.
5Tie the nine-knotted yellow thread on the right wrist and listen to the vrat katha.
6Offer naivedya, do the aarti, and give tamboolam to married women.

Om Jai Lakshmi MataOm Jai Lakshmi Mata is a Hindi aarti to Goddess Lakshmi, sung while waving the lamp at the end of Lakshmi puja. It has a refrain and seven short stanzas that praise her as Mother of the world and the source of prosperity and good qualities. Families sing it at Lakshmi puja on Diwali night and on Fridays.

We live outside India. Is the date the same for us?

We list the India date only. The vratam is tied to the Friday before Shravana Purnima, so the date abroad is usually the same, but local panchangs can differ. Check with your temple before you plan.

Can Varalakshmi Vratam be done on another Friday?

Yes. If the Friday before Shravana Purnima is not possible, tradition allows the vratam on another Friday in Shravana.

Can unmarried women do the vratam?

Traditionally it is kept by married women. In many families, daughters and unmarried women sit with their mothers and join the puja. Follow your family's custom.

We can't find banana stems or a silver face for the Goddess. Is that a problem?

No. A clean steel or brass pot works as a kalash, and a printed image of Lakshmi is fine in place of a mukham. Use whatever flowers and leaves you can get. The puja and the katha matter most.
