About
Govardhan Puja falls on Kartika Shukla Pratipada, usually the day after Diwali. The Bhagavata Purana tells how Krishna asked the people of Braj to worship Govardhan hill, which fed their cows, instead of making offerings to Indra. Indra sent seven days of storm, and Krishna lifted the hill on one finger to shelter everyone beneath it. On this day families honour the hill, the cows and Krishna as Giridhari, the one who holds the mountain.
The heart of the day is Annakut, a 'mountain of food'. Homes cook as many dishes as they can, and many temples offer 56 (chhappan bhog). In Braj a small hill is shaped from cow dung in the courtyard, decorated, worshipped and walked around. In Gujarat the same tithi is Bestu Varas, the Gujarati new year, and in Maharashtra it is Bali Pratipada.
In 2026 India keeps it on Tuesday, November 10, two days after Diwali, because Amavasya lasts until 12:31 PM on November 9 and Pratipada is present at sunrise only on the 10th. In the USA, UK and Canada the Pratipada has begun before sunrise on November 9, so it is kept on Monday the 9th. Some Indian calendars, including the central government's restricted-holiday list, show November 9 for India too.

What you will need
Texts to recite
- Vakratunda MahakayaVakratunda Mahakaya is a two-line Sanskrit shloka to Lord Ganesh and one of the most widely recited. It asks the Lord with the curved trunk, radiant as ten million suns, to keep all our work free of obstacles. Tradition says it before any puja, study, journey or new venture, and many people chant it 11, 21 or 108 times on Wednesdays and on Ganesh Chaturthi.
- MadhurashtakamMadhurashtakam is an eight-verse Sanskrit hymn to Lord Krishna by Shri Vallabhacharya, founder of the Pushti Marg. Every line uses one word, 'madhuram' (sweet), to say that everything about Krishna is sweet: his lips, smile, flute, walk, friends and cows. Its refrain, 'Madhuradhipater akhilam madhuram', means 'all of the Lord of Sweetness is sweet'.
- Aarti Kunj Bihari KiAarti Kunj Bihari Ki is one of the best-loved aartis of Lord Krishna, sung in homes and temples across North India and the diaspora. In a refrain and four stanzas of Braj-flavoured Hindi, it pictures Krishna of Vrindavan beside Radha, with his flute, peacock crown and Vaijayanti garland. Families sing it daily, and above all at midnight on Janmashtami.
- Om Jai Jagdish HareOm Jai Jagdish Hare is one of the best-known Hindu aartis, a Hindi hymn to Lord Vishnu as Jagdish, "Lord of the universe", written by Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri of Punjab around 1870. It has a refrain and seven stanzas asking Vishnu to remove sorrow, forgive our faults and increase our faith. Many families close their puja or Satyanarayan katha with it, in India and across the diaspora.
Questions
When is Govardhan Puja 2026 in the USA?
Monday, November 9, 2026, a day earlier than India. In New Jersey the morning muhurat is 6:37 AM to 8:39 AM and the afternoon one 2:44 PM to 4:45 PM; in San Jose they are 6:41 AM to 8:45 AM and 2:57 PM to 5:02 PM. The UK and Canada also keep it on the 9th.
Why isn't Govardhan Puja the day after Diwali in India this year?
In India the Amavasya runs until 12:31 PM on November 9, so Pratipada is present at sunrise only on November 10. drikpanchang and dekhopanchang both give Tuesday, November 10. Some calendars, including the central government's restricted-holiday list, show November 9. If your temple follows one of those, go with your temple.
Is Govardhan Puja the same as Annakut?
Yes, they are the same day. Annakut means 'mountain of food', the offering at the centre of the puja.
Can we make the Govardhan hill without cow dung?
Yes. Abroad most families shape it from wheat-flour dough, or build the hill out of the Annakut food itself. The worship and the parikrama are what matter.
Do we have to make 56 dishes?
No. Chhappan bhog is a temple offering. At home, cook what you can with care, even three or four dishes, and offer them with love.
