Questions

Who wrote the Bajrang Baan?

Tradition says Goswami Tulsidas, who wrote the Hanuman Chalisa and the Ramcharitmanas. But it does not appear in the early collections of his works, so many scholars treat the attribution as uncertain.

What is the difference between the Hanuman Chalisa and the Bajrang Baan?

The Chalisa is a hymn of praise that many people recite calmly every day. The Bajrang Baan is an urgent plea for Hanuman to come and help, and it includes seed syllables such as Om Hreem and Om Hum. Many devotees recite the Chalisa daily and keep the Bajrang Baan for difficult times.

When should the Bajrang Baan be recited?

On Tuesdays and Saturdays, as with other Hanuman prayers. People also recite it in times of fear, illness in the family or serious trouble. Tradition says to recite it after bathing, in front of Hanuman's image with a lamp and incense, with a calm and sincere mind.

Can anyone recite the Bajrang Baan, including women?

Yes. Women and men both recite it at home and in temples. Elders usually say to recite it with humility and faith, for protection, and never with the wish to harm anyone.

Is the Bajrang Baan the same in every book?

No. Printed versions differ in the number and order of lines, and some add extra passages. Our text follows the standard version listed under Sources. We have not yet checked it against a Gita Press printing.

How long does the Bajrang Baan take to recite?

About 7 minutes at an unhurried pace.

Source and review

Source: Shri Bajrang Baan, standard printed text as given on hindi.webdunia.com and sritrimurtidham.org (both agree line for line), compared with sanskritdocuments.org (doc_z_otherlang_hindi/bajarangabaaNHindi) and hanumanbalajimandir.org

Versions differ considerably. Some add lines not in our text (e.g. 'गदा बज्र लै बैरिहिं मारो…', 'ॐकार हुंकार महाप्रभु धावो…', and a long passage beginning 'ताते विनती करौं पुकारी'), or order the middle chaupais differently. We print ह्रीं for the bija syllable that some printings show as ह्नीं/हीं. We could not consult a Gita Press printing of this text directly; a scholar should confirm against one.
