Questions

Who wrote Sukhkarta Dukhharta?

Samarth Ramdas, the Marathi saint of the 17th century (1608–1682) who also wrote the Dasbodh and the Manache Shlok. He signs it in the last stanza as "Das Ramacha", the servant of Ram.

When is it sung?

In Maharashtra it is the first aarti at almost every Ganesh puja, and during Ganeshotsav it is sung morning and evening for every day the idol is at home or in the pandal. Many Marathi families sing it daily, and on Sankashti Chaturthi.

Is it "nurvi" or "nuravi"?

"Nuravi". The word means "leaves nothing behind": Ganesh does not let even a word of obstacles remain. It is often sung quickly as "nurvi", which is fine when singing.

Is this the same as "Jai Ganesh Deva"?

No. "Sukhkarta Dukhharta" is a Marathi aarti by Samarth Ramdas. "Jai Ganesh Deva" is a Hindi aarti sung across North India. Many families sing both, one after the other.

How long does the aarti take?

About three minutes, with the refrain after each stanza.

Source and review

Source: Marathi aarti by Samarth Ramdas as given in the sanskritdocuments.org Marathi Arati Collection (marathi/documents/maaratii-5.itx, ITRANS, which notes "The Arati is by Samartha Ramadas"), cross-checked line by line with the text quoted on Marathi Wikipedia (सुखकर्ता दुःखहर्ता)

Both sources agree on every word. Spelling differences: mr.wikipedia "दुखहर्ता", "विघ्नांची", "कुमकुम", "हिरेजडित" and "मन कामना पूर्ती"; sanskritdocuments.org "duHkhahartaa" (दुःखहर्ता), "vighnaachii" (विघ्नाची), "kumkuma", "hiire jaDita" and "mana kaamanaapurtii". We print दुःखहर्ता, विघ्नाची, कुंकुम, हिरेजडित and 'मन कामना पूर्ती'; many people sing 'मनकामना पुरती'. sanskritdocuments.org splits the last line of stanza 3 into two lines; we keep the four-line form of mr.wikipedia. The sung aarti begins with stanza 1; we print the refrain first so the reader can repeat it after each stanza.
