O mind, worship compassionate Shri Ramchandra, who removes the dreadful fear of worldly existence. His eyes are like freshly bloomed lotuses; his face, his hands and his feet are like rosy red lotuses.

His beauty surpasses that of countless Kamadevas; he is lovely as a fresh dark rain-cloud. His yellow robe gleams on him like lightning. I bow to that pure one, the husband of Janaka's daughter.

Worship him, the friend of the helpless, radiant as the sun, who uproots the race of demons; the joy of the Raghus, the root of bliss, the moon of Kosala, the son of Dasharatha.

A crown is on his head, earrings in his ears, a lovely tilak on his brow, and splendid ornaments on every limb. His arms reach to his knees; he bears bow and arrows; he conquered Khara and Dushana in battle.

Thus says Tulsidas: O delight of the minds of Shiva, Shesha and the sages, you who destroy the wicked band of desire and the other inner enemies, make your home in the lotus of my heart.

Questions

Who wrote Shri Ramchandra Kripalu Bhajman?

Goswami Tulsidas, the sixteenth-century poet-saint who also wrote the Ramcharitmanas. It is pada 45 of his Vinaya Patrika, a collection of prayer-songs to Ram. He names himself in the last stanza: 'iti vadati Tulsidas', thus says Tulsidas.

Is 'Shri Ramchandra Kripalu' from the Ramcharitmanas?

No. It is from Vinaya Patrika, a separate work by Tulsidas. Many recordings add a chhand and sortha from the Balakanda of the Ramcharitmanas after the fifth stanza, the lines about Gauri blessing Sita. Those lines belong to a different text, so we give only the five stanzas of pada 45.

Is it 'bhaju man' or 'bhajman'?

Both. The Gita Press text reads 'bhaju man', meaning 'O mind, worship'. When sung, the two words run together, so people often write 'bhajman'. The meaning does not change.

When is this Ram stuti sung?

On Ram Navami, Diwali and Dussehra, at bhajan sandhyas, at the close of Sundarkand and Ramayana recitals, on Hanuman Jayanti and in daily evening prayer. Tradition holds that meditating on Ram's form while you sing it calms fear and steadies the mind. That is what its first line asks for.

How long does it take to sing?

About three minutes for the five stanzas.

Source and review

Source: Vinaya Patrika of Goswami Tulsidas, pada 45 (Raga Gauri), Gita Press Gorakhpur edition with Hindi bhavarth, as scanned on Hindi Wikisource (विनय पत्रिका.djvu, pages 79–80); cross-checked against Hindi Wikipedia and BhaktiBharat.com

We follow the Gita Press spelling, including 'भजु मन' (popularly sung 'bhajman'), 'कोसलचंद' and 'उदार'. Popular recordings often continue after stanza 5 with a chhand and sortha from Ramcharitmanas, Balakanda ('मनु जाहि राचेउ मिलहि सो बरु…' and 'जानि गौरि अनुकूल सिय…'), which are Sita's blessing from Gauri and not part of this Vinaya Patrika pada; they are not included here.
