About Hanuman Chalisa
The name comes from chalis, 'forty'. The hymn's forty chaupais, each a rhyming pair of sixteen-beat lines, are framed by two dohas at the start and one at the end. Goswami Tulsidas (traditionally dated c. 1532–1623), the poet-saint of Varanasi who also wrote the Ramcharitmanas, composed it in Awadhi. Its first doha is the same verse that opens the Ayodhya Kand of the Manas, and Tulsidas signs his name in the fortieth chaupai.
Questions
Is this the same Hanuman Chalisa that is sung in Hindi?
Yes. These are the same Awadhi words, written in Odia letters so you can read them aloud. It is a transliteration, not a translation into Odia. The meaning of each verse is given in English.
How was the Odia text prepared?
We keep one checked Devanagari edition (Shri Hanuman Chalisa, Gita Press Gorakhpur reading (as printed in the appendix to Gita Press's Shri Ramcharitmanas; scanned copy on archive.org), cross-checked line by line with sanskritdocuments.org (doc_z_otherlang_hindi/chaalisa) and vignanam.org) and write it in Odia letters with fixed spelling rules, so every verse matches the original letter for letter. The English-letter line is the common singing spelling.
