About Shani Chalisa
Like the Hanuman Chalisa, the Shani Chalisa opens with dohas, has forty chaupais and closes with a doha. It first remembers Ganesh, then describes Shani Dev: dark, four-armed, crowned, with a slanting gaze, holding a mace, trident and axe. Two chaupais give his ten names.
Questions
Is this the same Shani Chalisa that is sung in Hindi?
Yes. These are the same Hindi words, written in Odia letters so you can read them aloud. It is a transliteration, not a translation into Odia. The meaning of each verse is given in English.
How was the Odia text prepared?
We keep one checked Devanagari edition (Traditional Hindi text, cross-checked line by line against sanskritdocuments.org (doc_z_otherlang_hindi/shani40, navagraha section), Bharat Discovery / Bharatkosh (शनि चालीसा), BhaktiBharat.com (chalisa/shani-chalisa) and Amar Ujala (shani-chalisa-lyrics-in-hindi)) and write it in Odia letters with fixed spelling rules, so every verse matches the original letter for letter. The English-letter line is the common singing spelling.
