The text

Refrain

જય જય શ્રી શનિદેવ ભક્તન હિતકારી। Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari

સૂરજ કે પુત્ર પ્રભુ છાયા મહતારી॥ Suraj Ke Putra Prabhu Chhaya Mahatari

Meaning

Glory, glory to Shri Shani Dev, who works for the good of his devotees. Lord, you are the son of the Sun, and Chhaya is your mother.

In homes this refrain is sung first and again after each stanza.

Stanza 1

શ્યામ અંક વક્ર દૃષ્ટ ચતુર્ભુજા ધારી। Shyam Ank Vakra Drisht Chaturbhuja Dhari

નીલામ્બર ધાર નાથ ગજ કી અસવારી॥ Neelambar Dhar Nath Gaj Ki Asvari

જય જય શ્રી શનિદેવ ભક્તન હિતકારી। … Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari … Refrain, sung again

Meaning

Your body is dark, your gaze is slanting, and you bear four arms. Lord, you wear blue garments and ride an elephant.

Shani is most often shown on a crow, but the elephant is also one of the seven mounts named in the Shani Chalisa.

Stanza 2

ક્રીટ મુકુટ શીશ રજિત દિપત હૈ લિલારી। Kreet Mukut Sheesh Rajit Dipat Hai Lilari

મુક્તન કી માલા ગલે શોભિત બલિહારી॥ Muktan Ki Mala Gale Shobhit Balihari

જય જય શ્રી શનિદેવ ભક્તન હિતકારી। … Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari … Refrain, sung again

Meaning

A crown adorns your head and your forehead glows. A string of pearls shines at your throat; I offer my whole self to you.

"क्रीट" and "रजित" are the popular sung forms of किरीट (crown) and राजित (adorned); sanskritdocuments.org prints "किरिट".

Stanza 3

મોદક મિષ્ઠાન પાન ચઢત હૈં સુપારી। Modak Mishthan Paan Chadhat Hain Supari

લોહા તિલ તેલ ઉડદ મહિષી અતિ પ્યારી॥ Loha Til Tel Udad Mahishi Ati Pyari

જય જય શ્રી શનિદેવ ભક્તન હિતકારી। … Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari … Refrain, sung again

Meaning

Modaks, sweets, paan and betel nut are offered to you. Iron, sesame, oil, urad dal and the buffalo are very dear to you.

Iron, sesame, sesame oil and urad dal are the things traditionally given in Shani's name. In older practice a buffalo was also among such gifts.

Stanza 4

દેવ દનુજ ઋષિ મુનિ સુમરિન નર નારી। Dev Danuj Rishi Muni Sumirin Nar Nari

વિશ્વનાથ ધરત ધ્યાન શરણ હૈં તુમ્હારી॥ Vishwanath Dharat Dhyan Sharan Hain Tumhari

જય જય શ્રી શનિદેવ ભક્તન હિતકારી। … Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari … Refrain, sung again

Meaning

Gods, demons, rishis, munis, men and women all remember you. Vishwanath meditates on you; we have come to your shelter.

Some read "Vishwanath" as the poet's name, placed in the last stanza as aartis often do. Others read it as Shiva, Lord of Kashi.

About Shani Dev Aarti

This is the Shani aarti printed in most Hindi aarti-sangrah booklets and sung in North Indian homes and Shani temples on Saturday evenings. It is short and simple: Shani Dev as the son of Surya and Chhaya, dark, four-armed, in blue, crowned and garlanded with pearls; the offerings made in his name; and a closing line in which gods, rishis and ordinary people alike take his shelter.

Questions

Is this the same Shani Dev Aarti that is sung in Hindi?

Yes. These are the same Hindi words, written in Gujarati letters so you can read them aloud. It is a transliteration, not a translation into Gujarati. The meaning of each verse is given in English.

How was the Gujarati text prepared?

We keep one checked Devanagari edition (Traditional Hindi aarti as given by BhaktiBharat.com (aarti/shri-shani-dev-ji) and Bharat Discovery / Bharatkosh (शनिदेव जी की आरती), cross-checked with the copy printed after the Shani Chalisa on sanskritdocuments.org (doc_z_otherlang_hindi/shani40)) and write it in Gujarati letters with fixed spelling rules, so every verse matches the original letter for letter. The English-letter line is the common singing spelling.
