About Sri Venkatesa Suprabhatam
Every morning before dawn, the doors of the Tirumala sanctum open to the sound of this hymn, in the Suprabhata Seva, the first service of the day. The poet, Prativadi Bhayankaram Annangaracharya, lovingly called Annan, was a 15th-century Sri Vaishnava scholar and a disciple of Manavala Mamunigal. He begins with a verse from Valmiki's Ramayana, in which the sage Vishvamitra wakes the young Rama. Then, in the gentle vasantatilaka metre, he describes the dawn gathering around the Lord: sages bringing lotuses, Narada singing on his vina, bees and parrots waking, the planets and the guardians of the directions waiting at his door. Most verses end with the refrain "Sri Venkatachalapate tava suprabhatam", "O Lord of the Venkata hill, may your morning be auspicious."
Questions
Is this the same Sri Venkatesa Suprabhatam that is sung in Hindi?
Yes. These are the same Sanskrit words, written in Malayalam letters so you can read them aloud. It is a transliteration, not a translation into Malayalam. The meaning of each verse is given in English.
How was the Malayalam text prepared?
We keep one checked Devanagari edition (Sri Venkatesa Suprabhatam (Suprabhatam section, 29 shlokas) as recited in the Tirumala Suprabhata Seva; text collated from sanskritdocuments.org (venkatsp), stotranidhi.com (Devanagari edition), sa.wikisource.org (श्रीवेङ्कटेशसुप्रभातम्) and shlokam.org) and write it in Malayalam letters with fixed spelling rules, so every verse matches the original letter for letter. The English-letter line is the common singing spelling.
