Meaning

Mother Lakshmi, be kind and come to live in my heart. Fulfil the wishes of my mind and answer my hopes.

BhaktiBharat and AstroSage print "परुवहु", a slip for "पुरवहु" (fulfil), which sanskritdocuments.org and Shubh Panchang have. sanskritdocuments.org and bharatdiscovery.org also give a second opening couplet, "सिंधु सुता विष्णुप्रिये नत शिर बारंबार", which the other sources leave out; we leave it out too.

Sortha

Meaning

A sortha is a doha with its half-lines reversed, so the rhyme falls in the middle of each line (ardas / suvas).

About Lakshmi Chalisa

Like the Hanuman Chalisa, Lakshmi Chalisa is written in the doha-chaupai metre of Awadhi devotional poetry. It is a later folk composition, and the closing lines carry the name Ramdas, which is all we know of its poet. The first part praises Lakshmi as Mother of the world, recalls the fourteen treasures of the churning of the ocean, and says that whenever Vishnu is born on earth she comes with him, as Sita when he came as Ram. The second part describes the blessings tradition attaches to reading it, including a forty-day recitation, and ends with the poet's own plea for mercy.

Questions

Is this the same Lakshmi Chalisa that is sung in Hindi?

Yes. These are the same Awadhi words, written in Punjabi letters so you can read them aloud. It is a transliteration, not a translation into Punjabi. The meaning of each verse is given in English.

How was the Punjabi text prepared?

We keep one checked Devanagari edition (Shri Lakshmi Chalisa as printed in popular aarti-chalisa booklets; text compared line by line across BhaktiBharat.com, AstroSage, Shubh Panchang (shubhpanchang.com), sanskritdocuments.org (laxmi40.itx) and Bharatkosh (bharatdiscovery.org). No Gita Press printing was available to us.) and write it in Punjabi letters with fixed spelling rules, so every verse matches the original letter for letter. The English-letter line is the common singing spelling.
