About Shiv Chalisa

Like other chalisas, the Shiv Chalisa is built of chaupais framed by dohas. It opens with Ganesh, then paints Shiva's form: the moon on his forehead, serpents as earrings, the Ganga in his hair, ash, a tiger skin, the trident, and Parvati at his left with Nandi, Ganesh and Kartikeya around him. The middle part recalls his great deeds: sending Kartikeya to defeat Taraka, destroying Jalandhara and Tripura, receiving the Ganga for Bhagiratha, drinking the poison from the churning of the ocean and becoming Neelkanth, blessing Ram before Lanka, and testing Vishnu's devotion with a thousand lotuses.

Questions

Is this the same Shiv Chalisa that is sung in Hindi?

Yes. These are the same Hindi words, written in Punjabi letters so you can read them aloud. It is a transliteration, not a translation into Punjabi. The meaning of each verse is given in English.

How was the Punjabi text prepared?

We keep one checked Devanagari edition (Traditional Hindi text, cross-checked line by line against sanskritdocuments.org (doc_z_otherlang_hindi/siva40), Bharat Discovery / Bharatkosh (शिव चालीसा), BhaktiBharat.com (chalisa/shiv-chalisa) and AstroVed (hindi/blog/shiv-chalisa)) and write it in Punjabi letters with fixed spelling rules, so every verse matches the original letter for letter. The English-letter line is the common singing spelling.
