About Lingashtakam
The Linga is Shiva's formless sign. Tradition describes it as a pillar of light that points beyond form. Lingashtakam praises that sign in eight verses. Each verse says who worships the Linga (Brahma, Vishnu, gods, sages, siddhas, even asuras), how it is adorned (fragrance, gold, serpent, kumkum, lotus garlands) and what it does (ends sorrow, burns desire, humbles pride, removes sin and poverty).
Questions
Is this the same Lingashtakam that is sung in Hindi?
Yes. These are the same Sanskrit words, written in Punjabi letters so you can read them aloud. It is a transliteration, not a translation into Punjabi. The meaning of each verse is given in English.
How was the Punjabi text prepared?
We keep one checked Devanagari edition (Lingashtakam as printed in "Prabhata Stotranidhi" (stotranidhi.com, Devanagari); cross-checked line by line with sanskritdocuments.org lingashh.itx (encoded and proofread by Srinivas Sunder, updated 2022)) and write it in Punjabi letters with fixed spelling rules, so every verse matches the original letter for letter. The English-letter line is the common singing spelling.
