About Shiva Tandava Stotram

Popular tradition tells that Ravana, proud of his strength, tried to lift Mount Kailasa. Shiva pressed the mountain down with a single toe, pinning him beneath it, and Ravana, in pain and then in devotion, poured out this hymn. Pleased, Shiva released him and, the story goes, gave him the name Ravana, "the one who roared". Whatever its origin, the hymn is loved for its sound: it is written in the panchachamara metre, sixteen syllables a line with short and long syllables alternating, so that words like "damad damad damad" and "dhimid dhimid" beat like a drum.

Questions

Is this the same Shiva Tandava Stotram that is sung in Hindi?

Yes. These are the same Sanskrit words, written in Punjabi letters so you can read them aloud. It is a transliteration, not a translation into Punjabi. The meaning of each verse is given in English.

How was the Punjabi text prepared?

We keep one checked Devanagari edition (Shiva Tandava Stotram (15 shlokas + 2 phalashruti) as attributed to Ravana; text collated from sanskritdocuments.org (shivtAND), sa.wikisource.org (शिवताण्डवस्तोत्रम्) and stotranidhi.com (Devanagari edition)) and write it in Punjabi letters with fixed spelling rules, so every verse matches the original letter for letter. The English-letter line is the common singing spelling.
